Holbox: a hidden and virgin paradise

Luis Alberto Cervantes

Quintana Roo is well known for having two of the most important destinations in México: Cancún and Playa del Carmen, but there are more amazing places that you can visit in this state.

The perfect example is Holbox Island, a fishing village located right in the north of Quintana Roo. Its name means “black hole” and this little island is the perfect spot for travelers that are looking for a hidden place to relax in a peaceful place.
It is approximately 41.84 kilometres (26.00 miles) long and 2 kilometres (1.24 miles) wide, and it is separated from the mainland by Yalahau lagoon. The island is accessed by ferry departing from the town of Chiquila. There are few cars, the main means of transportation are golf cars, bikes and mopeds.
One of the best things here is the beach, with shallow water and very calm waves, making the perfect spot to relax and be in touch with nature. You can also enjoy great snorkeling and even swim with the whale shark from June to September!

Another place to visit here is “Isla Pájaros” (Bird Island). This island is located 30 minutes by boat from Holbox. Isla Pajaros is only 200 feet (60 meters) wide and is home to a variety of birds. As some of them are endangered species, two observation points and walkways are provided to minimize the direct contact with the birds.

During the evening you can have a nice dinner in any of the restaurants in Holbox Island, where you can taste all the local specialties, like the lobster pizza  or have a drink in any of the downtown bars.

And in the dark nights of summer, you will be able to see a bright blue light that illuminates the beaches of the island; these are noctiluca scintillans glowing because of the gentle movement of the Caribbean Sea. As the waves crashes the shore these microorganisms emit flashes of light in silver, green and blue tones.

So if you’re looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to take a break, Holbox is the perfect destination to travel. If you're interested in visiting this place, you can book private transportation with Entertainment Plus here!

5 places in Cancun downtown you must visit

Luis Alberto Cervantes

Cancun is one of the most important tourist destinations in México and the world, and it’s best known for its beaches and nightlife, but there’s another part of this city that sometimes is unknown for most of the travelers.

In theory, Cancun is divided into two parts: Cancun Hotel Zone and Cancun City / Downtown, and most of the time tourists don’t get to know the second part of Cancún, or at least, not entirely. So, if you want to know more about Cancún and experience the local life, you can go to any of these places.

Mercado 28 / Plaza Bonita
In the heart of Cancun’s Downtown, you will find two of the most historic and iconic places in this city: Plaza Bonita and Market 28. Here you’ll find a lot of souvenirs for your family and friends or have a really good meal in any of the restaurants that are in here. The best part is that you can get there easily; just take a bus (Route 1 or 27) from your hotel and you’ll be there in a few minutes.

Kabah Park
Despite being a crowded city, Cancún has a natural lung that provides to Cancun citizens the opportunity of being one with nature. Located on Kabah Avenue, Kabah Park is a place where you can exercise surrounded by trees, have a relaxed walk or maybe enjoy a picnic in one of the gardens of the park. Here you can also find a small museum where you can learn about the history of the city; a pond where, if you’re lucky enough, you can see crocodiles and turtles; and a replica of a Mayan village.

Andres Quintana Roo Soccer Stadium/Beto Ávila Baseball Stadium
Located on Kabah Avenue, the Andres Quintana Roo stadium is the home of the soccer club Atlante F.C since 2007. Watching a match of the local team can be a good way to have a good time in this city. The best part, the tickets are not expensive and it’s super easy to get there.

Cancún also has a baseball stadium, home of Quintana Roo Tigers since 2007, and it’s just next to Andres Quintana Roo Stadium. So if you are a baseball fan, don't miss the opportunity and watch a game of the Tigers.

Cancun’s Planetarium Ka’yok
If you love science and space, this is a good option for you. Located next to Downtown’s Walmart, it’s the perfect choice to have an educative day and learn a little more about science, technology and the Mayan worldview. It’s super easy to get there; just take a bus (Route 1 or 27) from your hotel and you’ll be there in just a few minutes.

Parque de las Palapas
Last but not least, this iconic park is a must if you visit Cancun. Located near Tulum Avenue and close to the entrance of the Hotel Zone, Parque de las Palapas is a place where the local people of Cancun gather to eat all kind of Mexican food and enjoy the shows that take place on weekends.

The best beaches in Riviera Maya

Luis Alberto Cervantes

The Riviera Maya has the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, making this tourist destination one of the most visited in the world. If you want to have the time of your life you must go to one of these beaches:

Xcacel
Located between Chemuyil and Xel-Ha, this remote beach is the perfect place to rest and relax away from the crowds. Only a small number of travelers actually get a chance to find this beach. Luckily a sign has been built on the highway to help people find Xcacel.

Akumal
This is a tourist destination in Quintana Roo that was created even before Cancun. Akumal started as a perfect place for divers, founded by Pablo Romero Bush, one of the co-founders of CEDAM, an exclusive diving club. Since then, Akumal started to grow significantly, creating an opportunity for travelers to enjoy this paradise, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, diving and if you’re lucky, you can see turtles nesting and hatching!

Paamul
Just 15 km from Playa del Carmen, there is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Riviera Maya: Paamul. Its name means “destroyed ruin”, which gives the hint that this place was a Mayan settlement a long time ago. Also, it has it’s very own reef where you can snorkel and discover all the natural treasures of this place.

Xpu Ha
Immersed in one of the most hidden areas of the Riviera Maya, Xpu Ha has calm waves with water just two feet deep, allowing you to practice kayaking or just sunbathe or swim. The perfect place for a relaxing time.
