The perfect example is Holbox Island, a fishing village located right in the north of Quintana Roo. Its name means “black hole” and this little island is the perfect spot for travelers that are looking for a hidden place to relax in a peaceful place.
It is approximately 41.84 kilometres (26.00 miles) long and 2 kilometres (1.24 miles) wide, and it is separated from the mainland by Yalahau lagoon. The island is accessed by ferry departing from the town of Chiquila. There are few cars, the main means of transportation are golf cars, bikes and mopeds.
One of the best things here is the beach, with shallow water and very calm waves, making the perfect spot to relax and be in touch with nature. You can also enjoy great snorkeling and even swim with the whale shark from June to September!

Another place to visit here is “Isla Pájaros” (Bird Island). This island is located 30 minutes by boat from Holbox. Isla Pajaros is only 200 feet (60 meters) wide and is home to a variety of birds. As some of them are endangered species, two observation points and walkways are provided to minimize the direct contact with the birds.

During the evening you can have a nice dinner in any of the restaurants in Holbox Island, where you can taste all the local specialties, like the lobster pizza or have a drink in any of the downtown bars.

And in the dark nights of summer, you will be able to see a bright blue light that illuminates the beaches of the island; these are noctiluca scintillans glowing because of the gentle movement of the Caribbean Sea. As the waves crashes the shore these microorganisms emit flashes of light in silver, green and blue tones.
