From the beginning of humanity, man showed interest in the stars and universe, and believed that they are linked to a creative force that influences nature.
For this reason, ancient people studied the Sun's behavior and used their knowledge to raise houses and buildings so they could receive the greatest benefit from its vast energy. One of the cultures that put this in practice was the Mayan, and proof of that is the beautiful pyramids located in the Yucatan Peninsula.
During the equinoxes, the Sun locates precisely in the equator, which makes the day and the night last precisely the same. This phenomenon happens twice a year; the first being on March 20th and the second on December 21st. However, the most important for its symbolism is that of March because it is considered to have a balance between darkness and light.
Many people often go to ancient centers, such as pyramids, to receive the energy of the Sun during this events. One of the most important ceremonies is carried out in Chichen Itza, specifically at the Castle or Kukulcan Pyramid.
In this building, the sunlight produces a visual effect in the stairway of the pyramid. As the Sun travels across the sky, the shadow that is projected on the sides of the building forms the body of a serpent that goes down a staircase finished with two sculptures of the head of a snake. It is in this moment when people raise both their hands and, at the sound of big seashells, they move their body to face the four cardinal points one at the time.
As soon as the moment ends, dancers start to dance and perform traditional rites of the Mayan culture. Do not be afraid to join their dances and enjoy as much as you can.

The tradition is to go dressed in white clothes to receive all the possible energy of the Sun. I recommend you carry plenty of water and sunscreen because the heat is intense, there are almost no shadows and you will be there for some time. Wear a good cap or hat as well. Also, you should bring a snack so you can witness the whole event without wasting time looking for something to eat. In case you need it, there will be ambulances and medical services available on the spot. The phenomenon can be observed very well from any place that faces the facade that has the heads of snakes at the end of the stairway, so do not go to the other side. From there, you can take great pictures, but if you want to take more professional photos, you can pay for special permission to take photos from the structure in front of the Kukulcan Pyramid.
It is advisable to arrive early in the morning to have a good place. You can get to Chichen Itza by taking an ADO bus, renting a car or going in a tour. However, being this such a unique event, a lot of people chose this date to visit the ruins so it can get a little crowded. That’s why I recommend you go on a private tour. This way you can select your pick up time as early as you want, you don’t have to wait for other people or lose time looking for a place to leave the car. Plus, you can go whenever you feel like.
