How to get to your hotel from Cancun's airport?

Luis Alberto Cervantes

One of the first problems, when someone arrives at a city, is finding good, safe and cheap transportation to your hotel, and Cancun is not the exception.
Cancun's airport is located far from the Hotel Zone and the Riviera Maya, so it's difficult to get to your hotel from there and then return. But don't worry, here are the best transportation options for you to get to your resort.

ADO BUS
These are public buses that depart from the airport at scheduled times. They take you directly to the bus station in Cancun or Playa del Carmen and leave every 45 minutes, from 8:00 a.m. until midnight.
This is the perfect option if you’re on a budget or if your hotel is in downtown Cancun / Playa del Carmen. However, if your hotel is in the Hotel Zone or somewhere else in the Riviera Maya, maybe this isn't the best choice for you because, once you arrive to the bus station, you'll have to take another bus or a cab to get to your hotel. That can take you, at least, another 20 minutes and carrying your bags all over the place might be uncomfortable.

TAXI
This options is easier and more comfortable. You can take it any moment you want and it will take you directly to where you need to be. However, it only applies for going from your hotel to the airport. Why? Because a special permit is required to pick up people at the airport, and most of the cabs do not have it.
Also, the prices are established by the driver at the moment he picks you up, and sometimes they can try to take advantage and charge you a very high price. So, be careful and agree on the price before you get in a cab.

PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION
Last but not least, the safest, most comfortable, and easiest transportation option is a private transfer. This way, you get a vehicle exclusively for you and your companions that takes you directly to your hotel. You don’t have to wait on other people, carry your bags around or walk a long distance. If you're traveling with several people, this is definitely your best option.
You can find several companies in Cancun and the Riviera Maya that offer this service, but we recommend USA Transfers. They are the best choice. With over 10 years of experience, bilingual professional drivers, vehicles in perfect conditions, the best customer service and some of the lowest prices in town, it’s easy to see why USA Transfers is one of the most recommended companies and is so highly ranked on TripAdvisor.

Cancun's public bus tips

Luis Alberto Cervantes

One of the most difficult things doing during vacations it's finding the best way to move around the city you are. Cancun is no exception; you must decide between a taxi or a public bus. If your call is a bus, here are some tips we hope you find helpful.

  • Cancun has a public bus system just like every city in the world. Of course, many of the buses in use are not in as good shape as the ones you are used to, but it is the cheapest way to get around Cancun.
  • The Cancun bus system works just like any city bus system, sorta.
  • You find the main street and look for a bus stop sign. Usually a blue or black sign with a picture of a bus. Stand there and wait. If you know the bus you want and you see it coming, wave your arms. The bus will stop, you get on and pay.
  • You used to have to keep your bus ticket to be collected later. It's no longer needed, but still, keep it. If anything, you'll have a weird souvenir from your trip.
  • Know your destination or some of the places that are close to it. Look out the window and watch for your intended location. If you hear anybody speaking your language on the bus, ask them if they know your destination and how far, what side of the road.
  • When you get to your destination, move quickly. Ring the buzzer if it works; if it doesn't work, scream ALTO! (STOP in Spanish) and walk to the door and exit.
  • Do not rely on asking the driver to stop at your destination. Even if you do and the driver says okay, chances are he will forget.
  • In the Cancun Hotel Zone, you can take any bus to go up and down the strip to any of the malls or beaches.

COST: Buses at the Hotel Zone are $12.00 pesos per ride. Peso coins only. American dollar bills are okay but expect not to get any change back, unless you ask for it (and even then you may not get it).

CANCUN BUS ROUTES

There are 4 bus routes that go into the Hotel Zone: R-1, R-2, R-15 & R-27.

  • R-2 & R-15 go to Wal-Mart & Mercado 28.
  • R-1 goes to Puerto Juarez, Wal-Mart, Mercado 23 and the Cancun bus station.
  • R-27 travels on Tulum Ave and stops at Plaza Las Americas where you catch the "colectivo" to go south up Hwy 307 to Playa del Carmen - Tulum and all points in-between.
